Soundtrack for "NOWHERENOW" (2009)

Fritz Feger's music for the short film NOWHERENOW by Volker Schmitt is, with respect to its function, a classical illustration music: it is orchestral, with a rhythmic correspondence to popular music, and with improvisational elements from jazz. With the exception of the Headphone Music band featuring electric guitar and bass as well as drum set the setup is classical, too: there are strings (for budget reasons celli only), brass, orchestral percussion, vocals and whistling, and a Fender Rhodes.

+ Euphory, Triumph, Fight
+ NOWHERENOW Finale (Gone)

For the remainder of the soundtrack there is no score, either because the material comes very close to the two of the partitions, or because the music is improvised.

Maden in OWL: A HipHop/Classical Music Battle (2008)

Commisioned by "Kulturnacht Made in OWL" on April 13, 2008 at Lipperlandhalle, Fritz Feger has composed a "HipHop/Classical Music Battle". Personnel: one or more rappers (aka Schneider MC with four songs which are already published with different music under the same lyrics, Fender bass or double bass and drums as well as a symphony orchestra with two flutes (2. fl. also piccolo), two oboes (2. ob. also cor anglais), two clarinets, two fagots, two french horns, two trumpets, kettle drums, percussion (snare drum etc., glockenspiel and marimba), 1. and 2. violins, violas, celli, double basses.

The first song "Geht rein" is an frenetical-R'n'B-number with furious strings EW&F-ish brass and rhythm section; the intro to the song features the same material presented by the orchestra as neo-classicist-film-music classical music. The song melts down to a meditative sequence with solo violin with a somehow eastern european and mystic flavour. Using new material but the same dark atmosphere the song "Regen" starts. A vocal line from the original Schneider MC track has survived but dives into a phrygian light. Along the lyrics the song developes a positive approach and eventually lands in a feelgood minimal interlude. In the next song "Liebe ist..." the band and the orchestra play "cool" accompaning the Raggamuffin refrain, then in the verse again the "underwater" atmo of the minimal part. Finally a fast and pressing archaic part as if from Quo vadis introduces the last song "Praxis Dr. Schneider". The kettle drums play the melody, the orchestra plays sample-like pieces, and then, all of a sudden, it is all over.

Heinz Rudolf Kunze Songs with Symphony Orchestra (2008)

Also commissioned by "Kulturnacht Made in OWL" (see above) on April 13, 2008 at Lipperlandhalle, Fritz Feger has written orchestral arrangements for four songs by Heinz Rudolf Kunze Personnel: Heinz Rudolf Kunze singing and playing guitar or piano (Ich hab's versucht), Wolfgang Stute playing guitar, Hajo Hoffmann playing mandolin, and an orchestra with two flutes (2. fl. also piccolo), two oboes (2. ob. also cor anglais), two clarinets, two fagots, two french horns, two trumpets, kettle drums, percussion (snare drum etc., glockenspiel), 1. and 2. violins, violas, celli, double basses.

"Ich hab's versucht" is a classical pop ballad, and this is exactly how the orchestra arrangement works. "Woran man mit mir war" has an atmosphere reminiscent of Ennio Morricone and the Italo Western; the piccolo is inspired by the tin whistle of the garbage dealers. "Die Wahrheit vom letzten Hemd" is quite a departure from the original; in fact a tribute to Burt Bacharach (viz. The Very Idea of Love (Burt Bacharach Reconsidered) by 2001). "Immer für Dich da" is constructed a pompous hollywoodesque multiplex emotion.

+ Ich hab's versucht
+ Woran man mit mir war
+ Die Wahrheit vom letzten Hemd
+ Immer für Dich da

String arrangements on Dirk Schelpmeiers "Seestücke und Weibsbilder" (2008)

Accompaning Dirk Schelpmeiers funny "Freibad", very classically four careful strings play - instead of two violas and two celli (as the Feger bros. cannot play the violin...), the arrangement also works with violin / violin / viola / cello. The same is true for "Von dort kann man das Meer sehen", with the exception that a "double quartet" is set. On the record, the voices are doubled or tripled in addition to get a thick, orchestral sound.

+ Freibad
+ Von dort kann man das Meer sehn

Stage Music for "Die kleine Hexe" (2007)

All pieces (with the exception of Schützenfest which is human and not a witch tune) are odd metered, but not difficult to listen to. Melodic. Instruments: female choir (Bulgarian style maybe), whistling, cello, double bass, mandoline, trombones, tuba, trumpets, prepared piano. Percussion is not written down but nice to have (listen to the .mp3 audio). Here's some more Hexen info.

Stage Music for "Momo" (2006)

The Seefahrt (Sea Journey) is written for, say, a medium large hijacker band. Gigi's Song is a simple song leadsheet, a capella choir. Maybe there would have been a lot more verses, a hit transpose et c. if only the premier did not happen so terribly early... Momo info

String arrangement for Muriel Zoe's Lullaby on Neon Blue (2005)

Along a simple guitar and the unpretentious voice of Muriel Zoe in her composition Lullaby a classical string quartet plays straight planes and a theme oriented chorus.

Stage Music for "Früchte des Nichts" (2004)

The first and the third piece are written for vocals (or rather screaming), electric bass and delay / loop sampler. They're best described as punk-hardcore-prog. The second work is a harmless little song. "Cinema frutti di niente" for melodica, trombone, tuba and celli reminds of the great Italian cinema, while the Lamento for baritone, gypsie-countertenor, cello, indian harmonium and multiphonics-tuba appears transfigured-sacral-mystical.

+ Wer nichts zu tun hat

Stage Music for "Jägermeister" (2002)

The traditional German folk songs out of which Jägermeister is composed are taken from folk song collections, downloaded from the internet or written down from memory. Of course, they sometimes sound anything but traditional with Jägermeister...

Stage Music for "Novemberszenen" (2002)

The stage music to the first performance of Lothar Trolle's Novemberszenen after Döblin at May 18, 2002, was written by Fritz Feger for the "extra choir" of the opera of Staatstheater Bielefeld. Most parts of the work are set for mixed choir with five voices. Occasionally, there are small solistic passages, and some movements require male or femal choir with four voices. This is indicated with the common abbreviations.

The Very Idea of Love
(Burt Bacharach Reconsidered) (2001/2003)

Fritz Feger has arranged classical pop songs of Burt Bacharach for vocals, jazz trio with piano, double bass and drums and string quartet. The string voices are not particularily virtuous (maybe with the exception of "Looking With My Eyes"), but are somewhat demanding with respect to intonation and routine in ensemble playing. It is however not required to deserve jazz phrasing; the whole matierial is written for jazz-unexperienced string players. The jazz has to be provided by the band...

A recording of the arrangements by the Fritz Feger Trio + Strings under the title "The Very Idea of Love (Burt Bacharach Reconsidered)" comes out on May 3. In the .mp3 section one can listen to the tentative mix of "The Last One to Be Loved" and "A House Is Not a Home", played by Fritz Feger Trio and Henning Vater, Jan Eckel, Raliza Nikolov, Mathias Feger and Anke Dieterle at string instruments.

+ The Last One To Be Loved
+ A House Is Not a Home (vocals and strings only)
+ Anyone Who Had a Heart
+ Looking With My Eyes
+ In Between the Heartaches
+ I Just Dont Know What to Do With Myself
+ What the World Needs Now (instrumental; strings only)
