Ein Volksfeind (2010)

Stage play by Henrik Ibsen. Director: Thomas Dannemann, stage design: Katrin Nottrodt, costume design: Regine Standfuss, music: Fritz Feger. Schauspiel Stuttgart, premiere on February 20, 2010 at 7:30 pm.

The basic idea of the Volksfeind stage music: today, there is a conservative mainstream which tries to bring everyone aboard creating a music which everyone can connect to. This is achieved by shuffling together or arbitrarily stringing together all kinds of harmless, congealed to a formula stubs from all popular styles. An original protest music has ceased to exist. Distorted guitars, cool rap, loud beats and other symbols of rebellion degenerate into the mere attitude in a music is getting worked up about, but which is meant to give possibly many a feeling of being in good hands.

Henrik Ibsen

Judgement: abetment of self-deception, in word and sound.

Hence, the stage music works with everything we know from the charts and TV. This music integrates rock, pop, soul, dance/techno, world music, folk, singer/songwriter, popular classical music and so on. Formally, melodically and harmonically, it sticks to the well-known which turned out to be evolutionary stable in successful pieces of all genres as being hit compatible. By relying on a "contemporary" sound it puts forward a fresh surface which lasts only for a couple of years or even months. Protagonists in Germany include Rosenstolz, Ich + ich, Xavier Naidoo und Silbermond.

On the Volksfeind stage this music, just like in real life, is meant to seduce the listener to lazyness of mind and emotion making us function as quiet tax payer and customer - with the stage music of course being a parody.
